11+ Grammar School Preparation: Sutton & Wallington
Support for families preparing for selective state grammar school entry, including the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET).
What the programme covers
Understand the admissions route
Schools in Sutton and Wallington have school-specific admissions policies. The common first-stage SET is not the entire selection process for every school. Families should check each school’s current published arrangements.
Develop the essential skills
Build secure English comprehension, vocabulary, mathematics, reasoning and timed exam technique. Preparation is planned around each pupil’s starting point.
Plan by school year
Year 4: foundations and reading. Year 5: structured practice and timed papers. Year 6: review school-specific requirements and final-stage preparation.
School choices and eligibility
Check catchment or residence requirements, registration deadlines, age eligibility, test stages and the current admissions policies before applying.
Sutton & Wallington: schools and admissions routes
The Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) is shared by six participating schools. Passing the SET is not an offer of a place. Five schools use further second-stage assessments; Greenshaw uses SET results for selective ability places. Always check eligibility, admissions criteria and registration directly with each school.
Exam preparation pathway
Year 4: reading fluency, comprehension, arithmetic and problem solving. Year 5: structured English and maths practice, timed papers, reasoning and feedback. Before assessment: mock examinations, timing, accuracy and targeted revision. We tailor work to each child’s school targets.

Sutton 11+ Exam Subjects, Kew Courses & Offers
The Sutton SET first stage tests multiple-choice English and Maths only. Eligible candidates for the five grammar schools also take written English and Maths at the second stage. Kew Learning plans focused teaching around these formats and each pupil’s needs.
Assessment stages
- SET Stage 1: multiple-choice English and Maths, approximately 40–50 minutes per paper.
- Stage 2: written English and Maths for the five grammar schools, using separate shared boys’ and girls’ examinations; Greenshaw uses the SET for its ability-place route.
- Schools apply their own qualification thresholds and score weightings; passing is not an offer.
English requirements
- SET: comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation, with accurate timed multiple-choice responses.
- Stage 2: written English; the girls’ paper particularly assesses extended writing. Check the relevant official school guidance for the boys’ paper.
Mathematics requirements
- SET: number and operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, measures, geometry, data and problem solving.
- Stage 2: non-multiple-choice written Maths, requiring accuracy, speed and independent solutions; follow current paper guidance on method marks.
Kew Learning course modules
- English comprehension: close reading, inference, information retrieval and accuracy.
- Vocabulary, grammar and spelling: common errors, meaning in context and multiple-choice techniques.
- Maths fundamentals and application: KS2 topics, multi-step problems, speed and accuracy.
- Stage 2 English writing: planning, structure, language and timed composition.
- Stage 2 Maths: written solutions, challenging questions, interpretation and checking.
- Exam technique and mock exams: timed practice, error analysis, module-level feedback and tailored advice.
- The Sutton SET does not test VR/NVR; reasoning can be taught separately for pupils targeting other schools.
Preparation pathway & mock exams

- Year 5: structured SET English and Maths, progressing to timed practice and writing.
- Year 6 before the exam: school-specific second-stage papers, in-person mocks and targeted revision.

Understanding the Sutton selective route
Practical guidance for families · course arrangements are confirmed individually.
One shared first-stage test
Greenshaw, Nonsuch, Sutton Grammar, Wallington County Grammar, Wallington High School for Girls and Wilson’s use the shared Selective Eligibility Test (SET). Families register once.
Second-stage assessments
For five grammar schools, SET eligibility permits a pupil to take second-stage entrance assessments. Greenshaw uses SET eligibility for consideration for an ability place.
Applications remain separate
Meeting an assessment threshold does not guarantee an offer. Families must also list their chosen schools in the secondary-school application and check each school’s admissions policy.
School admissions criteria, dates and exam specifications may change. Always check the official source for your application year.
